What is HighScope?

The HighScope curriculum is an active learning approach to education that focuses on the development of the whole child. This model, originally designed in the United States, focuses primarily on early childhood education (from birth to the first years of primary school) and encourages children to learn through direct, hands-on experiences.

This curriculum promotes key skills such as problem solving, autonomy, creativity and teamwork, and is based on child development theories such as those of Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky. It is widely used in early childhood education programmes around the world.

Plan - Do - Review

Plan-Do-Review is at the heart of the pedagogical approach of the HighScope curriculum and consists of a three-stage cycle (plan, do and review) that guides children’s active learning. This process enables them to make decisions, carry them out and reflect on their experiences, fostering key skills such as autonomy, problem solving and critical thinking.

How do we implement it?

At Bureche School, we have adopted the HighScope approach as the basis for our early childhood education, prioritising active learning and the holistic development of children. This educational model allows us to create an enriching environment where each student can explore, discover and learn in a meaningful way, respecting their interests and individual pace.

Implementing HighScope at Bureche enables us to develop autonomous, creative and confident children, ready to face the challenges of the future. This approach transforms learning into an active, enriching and purposeful experience, aligned with our mission to provide an education of excellence that values the individual in all his or her dimensions.

HighScope Strengths

Active learning

Children interact with materials, people, ideas and events to construct their own knowledge.

Structured routines

The day is organised into a predictable routine that includes times for planning, working and reflecting.

Prepared environment

Classrooms are organised into well-defined learning areas with age-appropriate materials.

Continuous assessment

Teachers observe and record children’s progress to support their individual development.

Learning environments

In the HighScope approach, learning environments are designed to foster children’s autonomy, active exploration and holistic development. The classroom is organised into clearly defined areas, each with accessible materials that stimulate play and learning. These areas are carefully planned to support different types of activities and skills, ensuring that children can interact freely with the spaces and resources available.
